The HB A&P Show community kubb champiionship is a fun, social and competitive tournament open to families, friends, workplaces, sports clubs, community groups, schools and anyone keen to have a go.
Whether you're a seasoned kubb player or completely new to the game, everyone is welcome.

What is Kubb?
Kubb is a fun and addictive outdoor game that combines skill, stratery and teamwork. Teams compete to knock over their opponents kubbs before taking aim at the king. Easy to learn and suitable for all ages, kubb is often described as a cross between lawn bowls, petanque and chess.
No previous experince required and all equipment is provided.
Team Information:
- Teams of 3 players tend to work best, although teams of 2–6 players are welcome
- Family teams, friends, workplaces, sports clubs, schools, and community groups are encouraged to enter.
- Fancy dress, team uniforms, and themed teams are strongly encouraged.
Competition Format:
The tournament will feature - pool play rounds, knockout finals, Show court matches, grand final and prizegiving
The grand final will be played on the Show court in front of spectators in the dressage arena.

RULES:
Hawke's Bay A&P Show Kubb Championships - These rules apply to the High School, Corporate and Community Kubb competitions
Objective
The aim of Kubb is to knock over all of your opponent's kubbs before knocking over the King. The first team to legally knock over the King wins the match.
Team Composition

Teams may consist of 2–6 players.

Teams of 3 players are recommended for the best game experience.

Players may rotate throwing order between rounds.

Only registered team members may play.
Equipment
Each pitch will include:

1 King
-
10 Kubbs (5 per team)

6 Batons
All equipment is supplied by the organisers.
Starting the Game
-
Teams stand behind their own baseline.
-
A coin toss (or equivalent) determines which team throws first.
-
Each team begins with five kubbs positioned evenly along their baseline.
Throwing Rules
-
Batons must be thrown underarm.
-
Batons should rotate end over end and must not be thrown sideways ("helicopter throws").

Players throw from behind the baseline unless field kubbs have been established.
Field Kubbs
-
Any baseline kubbs knocked over are thrown into the opponent's half of the pitch and become field kubbs.
-
If a field kubb lands outside the playing area, it is re-thrown once.
-
If it is thrown out again, the opposing team places it anywhere in their half of the court, at least one baton length from the King.
Order of Play
Teams must always:
-
Knock over all field kubbs first.
-
Then knock over baseline kubbs.
-
Never attempt the King until all opposing kubbs have been removed.
Fouls
A team commits a foul if they:
-
Throw overarm.
-
Throw a helicopter throw.
-
Step over the throwing line before releasing the baton.
-
Attempt to knock over the King before all opposing kubbs have been removed.
If a team knocks over the King early, they immediately lose the match.
Winning the Match
A team wins by:

Knocking over all opposing field and baseline kubbs.
-
Then legally knocking over the King.

Time Limits
If a match reaches the allocated time limit:

The team with the fewest remaining kubbs wins.

If tied, a sudden-death playoff may be used.
Sportsmanship
Kubb is played in the spirit of friendly competition.
Teams are expected to:

Respect officials and opponents.
-
Play fairly.
-
Encourage good sportsmanship.
-
Accept officials' decisions.
Unsportsmanlike behaviour may result in warnings or removal from the competition.
Dress
Fancy dress, school colours, corporate branding and themed team uniforms are encouraged. Prizes may be awarded for Best Dressed Team and Team Spirit.
