New for 2026

Introducing the Viticulture Award

For the first time, we're recognising excellence in the vineyard, not just the winery. The new Viticulture Award celebrates outstanding technical skill, sustainable and environmentally responsible practice, innovation, and consistent high quality fruit, alongside a viticulturist's contribution to the wider regional community through mentoring and knowledge sharing.

It's a nomination-based award, open to any viticulturist working in Hawke's Bay, and nominations can be made by anyone connected to the industry, including self-nominations. A judging panel will review nominations and conduct site visits to a shortlist of finalists ahead of judging week, ensuring the award reflects genuine, on-the-ground assessment. The winner will be announced at the Awards Dinner on Thursday 1 October.

Opening Entries to Gisborne

For the first time in our history, we're extending entries to Gisborne winemakers, a milestone moment for the Awards. Gisborne wines will be judged alongside our Hawke's Bay entries, held to the same exacting standard that has defined this competition for decades.

While Gisborne wines won't be eligible for the individual category trophies, every Gisborne wine awarded a gold medal will be in contention for a new trophy created especially for this milestone: the Champion Gisborne Wine. We're genuinely excited to welcome Gisborne into the fold and to see what the region brings to this year's competition.
