The Hawke's Bay A&P Show Youth Stock Judging Challenge is a fast-paced, hands-on competition designed to introduce young people to the art of livestock judging while developing practical agricultural knowledge, observation skills, and confidence.
Whether you're considering a career in agriculture, involved in Young Farmers, studying agriculture at school, or simply keen to learn something new, this competition is a great opportunity to challenge yourself in a supportive environment.
No previous judging experience is required.

Date: Thursday 22 October
Time: 9.15am
Duration: Approximately 90 minutes
Location: Meet at the Cattle arena, then move to Fleece Marquee and finish in the Sheep Pavillion
Competition Format
Participants will judge three classes:
Each class includes a brief educational introduction from an experienced judge before competitors assess and rank four exhibits using the Hummel Scale scoring system.
At the conclusion of the judging, the highest-scoring competitors will be invited to present oral reasons, explaining how and why they placed each exhibit. Judges will assess communication skills, reasoning, and overall understanding before the final results are announced.

Who Can Enter?
The competition is open to all school-aged young people.
If there is sufficient interest, we would also consider introducing an Under 25 division in future. If this is something you would be interested in, please let us know when entering or get in touch with us.
Whether you're a complete beginner or already have livestock judging experience, everyone is encouraged to take part.
