2024 Yara Women in Horticulture Scholarship Results

The 2024 Yara Women in Horticulture Scholarship prize of a $2,000 grant paid towards their selected course fees is Whitney Conder. Read Whitney's bio below.

"Originally from the deep south, my family were farmers in the Central Southland region. 5 years at Boarding school in North Otago and a degree from Otago University, I found I kept coming back to the land, working with it and getting my hands dirty. I started at the entry level into horticulture as a fruit picker during my summers as a university student. In terms of what ‘inspired me’, it was the lifestyle, it really appealed to me, sparked something. I decided that branching off into Horticulture was something that I could really enjoy doing and still does 21 years later.

I learnt more about responsibilities and my time management than ever before and found a lot of strength in being able to proudly contribute to the industry as a sole (female) grower and be a role model to younger generations. Beyond my work in the orchard, I actively participate in the Women in Horticulture scene in Central Otago as well as being a member on the executive committee for Women in Horticulture NZ. I am the Chair and organiser of our local Women in Horticulture group, where we gather for sponsored events, training opportunities, and regular get togethers.

By finding common ground and collaborating with others, we can work together to implement new ideas, foster innovation, and develop cutting-edge technologies that will ensure the future success and drive of the next generation. This scholarship will allow me to take on more opportunities to learn, to sustain and keep up with the connections across industries and provide value and inspiration to our emerging women in Horticultures near future. My long-term goal is to do a Nuffield Scholarship or allow myself to be exposed to any industry growth opportunities both in New Zealand and abroad."
